Historical context

Commodus ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192, initially as co-emperor alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and subsequently as sole ruler from 180. His reign brought an end to the Pax Romana and was marked by internal intrigues, an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership, and the devolution of daily administration to palace chamberlains and praetorian prefects.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard silver coin of the Roman world from circa 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse depicts Commodus wearing a laurel wreath, accompanied by the title "M ANTONINVS COMMODVS AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "TR P VII IMP IIII COS III P P" and features Annona, the personification of the grain supply, holding corn-ears and a cornucopia beside a modius.
