Historical context

Commodus was Roman emperor from 177 to 192, serving first alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and then governing alone from 180 until his assassination in 192, which ended the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. His sole reign was marked by palace intrigues and a dictatorial style of leadership.
