Historical context

This bronze sestertius was struck in Rome under the authority of the emperor Commodus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192. Having initially served alongside his father Marcus Aurelius as co-emperor, Commodus governed alone from 180 until his assassination in 192, an event that ended the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. His sole reign is traditionally regarded as marking the conclusion of the Pax Romana.

In the imperial monetary system, the sestertius served as a large coin denomination with a value equivalent to one quarter of a denarius, functioning as a practical unit within Roman commerce. Struck under Commodus, this issue honours Crispina with the obverse inscription "CRISPINA AVGVSTA". The reverse depicts the personification Concordia seated left, holding a patera and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "CONCORDIA S C".
