Historical context

His sole reign, often regarded as marking the conclusion of the Pax Romana, experienced fewer external military conflicts but was characterised by internal conspiracies, an increasingly dictatorial rule, and the delegation of administrative duties to favourites.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin represents the denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver denomination from circa 211 BC until its replacement under Gordian III. The obverse features Commodus with the legend "M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS". The reverse portrays Felicitas draped and holding a caduceus and sceptre, with a modius at her feet, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P VIIII IMP VI COS IIII P P".
