Historical context

Clodius Albinus was a Roman imperial pretender between 193 and 197, during the Roman imperial period. Following the murder of Pertinax in 193, an event known as the "Year of the Five Emperors", he was proclaimed emperor by legions in Britain and Hispania. During the earlier phase of his bid for power, Albinus cooperated with Septimius Severus before the two turned on each other in 196.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome. The obverse features the bare head of Clodius Albinus accompanied by the legend "D CL SEPT ALBIN CAES". The reverse portrays the deity Aesculapius standing and offering a patera or cake to a snake coiled around a rod, with the legend "COS II".
