Historical context
Clodius Albinus was a Roman imperial pretender between 193 and 197, proclaimed emperor by the legions in Britain and Hispania following the murder of Pertinax in 193. Although he initially cooperated with Septimius Severus, the two leaders entered into a civil war against each other in 196. Albinus died in battle the following year.
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Lugdunum under Albinus's authority. The denarius served as the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire from its introduction during the Second Punic War until the third century AD. The obverse depicts Albinus alongside the legend IMP CAES D CLO SEP ALB AVG, while the reverse features Victory holding a wreath and palm branch, accompanied by the inscription VICT AVG COS II.
