Historical context
Clodius Albinus was a Roman imperial pretender between 193 and 197. Proclaimed emperor by the legions in Britain and Hispania following the murder of Pertinax in 193, during the Year of the Five Emperors, he initially cooperated with his rival Septimius Severus. This alliance broke down in 196, leading to a civil war that concluded with the death of Albinus in battle the following year.
Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius represents a denomination used in commerce across the Roman Empire, where it functioned with a nominal value equivalent to one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses. The obverse features the bare head of the ruler accompanied by the legend "D CLOD SEPT ALBIN CAES". The reverse portrays a helmeted, draped Minerva standing left, bearing an olive-branch, shield, and spear, encircled by the inscription "MINER PACIF COS II S C".
