Historical context

Decimus Clodius Albinus was a Roman imperial pretender between 193 and 197. Following the murder of Pertinax in 193, during the Year of the Five Emperors, Albinus was proclaimed emperor by the legions in Britain and Hispania. He initially cooperated with Septimius Severus, another contender for the imperial throne, before the two turned on each other in 196, sparking a civil war that culminated in the death of Albinus in battle in 197.

This bronze sestertius was produced at the mint of Rome. In the Roman monetary system, the sestertius held a nominal value of two and a half asses, representing one quarter of a denarius, which made the denomination useful for everyday commerce. The obverse presents Albinus with the title in the legend "D CLOD SEPT ALBIN CAES", reflecting his initial alliance with Septimius Severus. The reverse depicts Concordia seated with a patera and double cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "CONCORDIA S C".
