Aureus in gold struck at Rome under Diadumenian, AD 217–AD 218, catalogued as RIC IV Macrinus 101. Obverse: Bust of Diadumenian, bare-headed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Diadumenian, standing front, head right, holding standard in right hand and sceptre in left hand; on right, two standards surmounted by eagle, wreath on hand. Obverse legend: M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES. Reverse legend: PRINC IVVENTVTIS.

Historical context

Diadumenian was the son of Emperor Macrinus, who was proclaimed emperor in April 217 following the murder of Caracalla. Diadumenian was raised to caesar in May 217 and briefly served as co-ruler in 218 before both father and son were defeated at the Battle of Antioch and executed. This gold aureus, the Empire's primary gold denomination, was minted in Rome representing the prince prior to the dynasty's fall.
