Historical context

Macrinus served as praetorian prefect under Emperor Caracalla before conspiring in his murder and succeeding him. Proclaimed emperor in April 217 while in the eastern provinces, Macrinus ruled jointly with his young son Diadumenianus until June 218. Although confirmed by the Senate, he never visited Rome during his reign, which ended when he was overthrown and executed following a rebellion supported by rebelling Roman legions.

This bronze as was produced by the mint of Rome. The obverse depicts the bust of the emperor with the imperial inscription "IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG". The reverse carries the legend "VOTA PVBL P M TR P S C" and depicts Fides standing left, holding a standard in each hand, flanked by an additional standard on each side.
