Historical context

Diadumenian was the son of the Roman emperor Macrinus and was appointed caesar in May 217, shortly after his father's accession. Following the revolt of Elagabalus in May 218, he was elevated to co-emperor. After Macrinus was defeated at the Battle of Antioch on 8 June 218, Diadumenian was sent towards the court of Artabanus IV of Parthia, but he was captured and executed.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius designates the prince as caesar through its obverse inscription "M OPEL ANTONINVS DIADVMENIANVS CAES". The reverse portrays Diadumenian holding a standard and sceptre alongside two additional military standards, accompanied by the legend "PRINC IVVENTVTIS S C". Following the deaths of Diadumenian and his father, the Senate declared both rulers enemies of Rome, ordering their names erased from official records and their images destroyed.
