Historical context

Macrinus served as praetorian prefect under Caracalla before conspiring against him and succeeding him as Roman emperor, reigning jointly with his young son Diadumenian from April 217 to June 218. Confirmed by the Senate while in the eastern provinces, Macrinus was the first emperor from the equestrian class and never visited Rome during his reign. His rule ended when he was overthrown and executed following a rebellion in June 218.

The obverse presents Macrinus with the legend IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG. The reverse design features the legend LIBERALITAS AVG and illustrates Macrinus and Diadumenian seated upon a platform alongside an officer, facing Liberalitas and a Roman citizen.
