Historical context

Macrinus served as praetorian prefect under Caracalla before conspiring in his assassination and succeeding him as emperor in April 217. Proclaimed in the eastern provinces and confirmed by the Senate, he was the first Roman emperor from outside the senatorial class and never visited Rome during his reign, which ended with his overthrow and execution in June 218.

Struck at Rome, this silver antoninianus belongs to the double-denarius denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215, characterised by the portrait showing the emperor wearing a radiate crown. Macrinus inherited depleted coffers and military unrest exacerbated by fiscal reforms. The reverse depicts Fides holding standards amidst additional standards, accompanied by the legend "VOTA PVBL P M TR P", while the obverse styles him "IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG".
