Historical context

Severus Alexander served as Roman emperor between 222 and 235 AD, representing the final ruler of the Severan dynasty. Having succeeded his murdered cousin Elagabalus at the age of 13, his thirteen-year reign involved military confrontations with the Sassanid Empire and Germanic tribes. Alexander ruled alongside the influence of his mother, Julia Avita Mamaea, until both were assassinated in March 235 AD during a military conspiracy.

Struck at the Rome mint under Severus Alexander, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that had circulated since approximately 211 BC. The coin was issued in honour of the emperor's mother, featuring her bust alongside the obverse legend "IVLIA MAMAEA AVG". The reverse depicts Venus accompanied by the legend "VENVS VICTRIX", showing the goddess holding a helmet and sceptre with a shield at her feet.
