Historical context

Severus Alexander ruled the Roman Empire from 222 until 235 AD, becoming emperor at the age of thirteen after the assassination of his cousin Elagabalus. He was the final emperor of the Severan dynasty. Although his reign saw military pressures from the Sassanid Empire and Germanic tribes, he governed for thirteen years before his murder in 235 AD led to the Crisis of the Third Century.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial title "IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG". The reverse depicts Pax, personifying peace, running while bearing an olive-branch and sceptre, accompanied by the reverse legend "P M TR P VI COS II P P".
