Historical context
Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors after the death of Pertinax. Following victories against his rivals Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, and Clodius Albinus, he secured his reign across the empire and waged campaigns in the east against the Parthian Empire, capturing Ctesiphon in 197.
Struck at the Rome mint, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC into the third century. The obverse presents Septimius Severus alongside the imperial legend "L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X", while the reverse bears the inscription "PACI AETERNAE" accompanying an image of Pax seated with a branch and sceptre.
