Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors. To secure and consolidate his authority across the empire, he fought civil wars against rival claimants, defeating Pescennius Niger in Cilicia in 194 and Clodius Albinus in Gaul in 197. Severus also campaigned extensively in the East, annexing Osroene and waging war against the Parthian Empire. This silver denarius was produced at the Syrian mint of Emesa.
