Historical context

Formerly a prominent politician under Philip the Arab, Trajan Decius was proclaimed emperor by his soldiers in Moesia. He defeated and killed Philip near Verona in 249, gaining Senate recognition and ruling until 251. This bronze sestertius was struck at Rome in AD 249, the year he assumed power, continuing a denomination originally derived from bronze asses during the Roman Republic and empire.
