Historical context
This antoninianus was struck under the authority of Allectus at the mint of Camulodunum during the Roman imperial period. First introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, the antoninianus served as a coin across the Roman Empire and was initially valued at two denarii.
The denomination was characterised by the emperor wearing a radiate crown, which indicated that it was a double denomination. Although originally struck in silver, the antoninianus experienced progressive debasement as the Roman Empire faced shortages of silver bullion, with soldier emperors and usurpers requiring coinage to pay their troops. On this issue, the obverse legend reads "IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts Felicitas holding a caduceus and cornucopiae, paired with legend variants including "TEMPORA FELIC", "TEMPORA FELICITAS", or "TEMPORVM FELICITAS".
