Historical context

This gold coin was struck under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire, which spanned from 27 BC to AD 476. Produced at the mint of Londinium, it bears his imperial title as part of the official coinage issued during his rule.

Struck as an aureus, the piece belongs to the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD, when the denomination was replaced by the solidus. Originally standardized during the Empire to equal 25 silver denarii or 100 sestertii, aurei provided high-value currency. The obverse depicts the bust of Allectus with the inscription "IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG", while the reverse portrays Minerva, draped and helmeted, holding an olive-branch and a spear while leaning on a shield, accompanied by the legend "COMES AVG".
