Historical context

This gold coin was issued under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire, which spanned from 27 BC to AD 476. Produced at the Londinium mint, it features the ruler on the obverse accompanied by the legend IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG.

Struck as an aureus, the piece belongs to the denomination that served as the primary gold coin of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD, when the solidus replaced it. Standardised during the Empire, the aureus was originally valued at 25 silver denarii and 100 sestertii. The reverse design of this issue depicts Sol standing left, raising his right hand and holding a globe or whip, sometimes flanked by two captives, alongside the legend ORIENS AVG.
