Historical context

Aurelian ruled the Roman Empire from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having taken the throne following the death of Claudius Gothicus and the brief rule of Quintillus. His reign was marked by military campaigns that defeated barbarian invaders, including the Alamanni, Goths, and Vandals, as well as monetary reforms attempting to curb the devaluation of Roman currency.

Struck at the Mediolanum mint, this silver antoninianus represents a denomination introduced under Caracalla and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The antoninianus typically featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown to indicate a double denomination, as seen on the obverse paired with the legend IMP AVRELIANVS AVG. The reverse design depicts Aurelian standing before the helmeted figure of Roma, who is seated on a shield and holds a spear and Victory, accompanied by the inscription ROMAE AETER or ROMAE AETERNAE.
