The obverse shows bust of Diocletian, radiate, draped, right, or bust of Diocletian, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right, or bust of Diocletian, radiate, cuirassed, right, or bust of Diocletian, radiate, wearing imperial mantle, right, holding eagle-tipped scetpre in right hand, with the legend IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG. The reverse shows jupiter, standing left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and sceptre in left hand, with the legend IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG.

Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, stabilizing the realm after the Crisis of the Third Century. In 286, he appointed his fellow officer Maximian as co-emperor with the rank of Augustus to rule the Western Roman Empire while he retained the east, establishing the shared governance structure of the Tetrarchy. Under Maximian's authority, mints such as Rome struck antoniniani, a denomination first introduced under Caracalla in 215, invoking divine protection for the joint rulers.
