Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305. Born Diocles in Dalmatia, he rose through the military ranks and was proclaimed emperor following the deaths of Carus and Numerian. After defeating Carinus, Diocletian stabilised the Roman Empire, later establishing the Tetrarchy and governing the Eastern Empire as senior Augustus while securing the frontiers through military campaigns.

This gold aureus was struck for Diocletian at the mint of Antioch in Syria. The aureus served as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. The coin bears an obverse depicting the emperor with the legend IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG, accompanied by a reverse showing a winged Victory holding a wreath and palm alongside the inscription VICTORIA AVG.
