Historical context

He initiated the division of the Roman Empire by appointing his fellow officer Maximian as co-emperor, or Augustus, in 286. While Maximian ruled the Western Empire, Diocletian governed the Eastern Empire as senior Augustus. Under Diocletian's authority, this coinage was produced at the mint of Cyzicus.

The antoninianus was introduced in 215 as a coin valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. Struck for his co-emperor, this piece carries the obverse legend "IMP C M A VAL MAXIMIANVS AVG". The reverse depicts Maximian receiving Victory on a globe from Jupiter, accompanied by the legend "CONCORDIA MILITVM".
