Historical context

To stabilize the empire, he appointed his fellow military officer Maximian as Augustus and co-emperor in 286 to govern the Western Empire, while Diocletian ruled the East. Maximian campaigned heavily against Germanic tribes and rebels along the Rhine. This antoninianus bearing Diocletian's name was struck under Maximian's authority at Lugdunum, the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
