Historical context
Florian, also known as Marcus Annius Florianus, briefly held power as Roman emperor in 276. He assumed the throne following the death of his half-brother Tacitus. His reign lasted only 88 days, ending when he was killed by his own soldiers during a confrontation with the rival emperor Probus, who had gained control of the Eastern provinces.
This bronze as was struck at the Rome mint under Florianus' authority during his brief rule in the Roman Empire. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait along with the title "IMP C M ANN FLORIANVS AVG". On the reverse, the coin features the legend "VIRTVS AVG S C" alongside a depiction of Florian standing right, holding a spear in his right hand and a globe in his left.
