Historical context

Gallienus was Roman emperor from 253 to 268, ruling alongside his father Valerian until 260 and then governing alone during the Crisis of the Third Century. Valerian took charge of the east while Gallienus administered the west. After Valerian was captured by the Sasanian Empire in 260, Gallienus retained sole control of the empire, facing numerous conflicts against Germanic tribes and internal usurpers until his death in 268.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this coin is an antoninianus, a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The coin featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown, which indicated its status as a double denomination. The reverse pairs the inscription NEPTVNO CONS AVG with the image of a hippocamp, while the obverse bears the portrait of Gallienus alongside the legend GALLIENVS AVG.
