Historical context

Postumus was a Roman commander of Batavian origin who assumed the title and powers of emperor around 260 after the Roman army in Gaul abandoned its allegiance to Gallienus. He governed the breakaway Gallic Empire, which included Gaul, Germania, Britannia, and Hispania, until his murder by his own soldiers around 269. This aureus was struck between AD 260 and AD 269 at Cologne, which was founded as Colonia Agrippina in the 1st century AD and served as the capital of Germania Inferior.
