Historical context

Postumus was a Roman commander of Batavian origin who reigned from 259 to 269 over the breakaway Gallic Empire, which comprised Gaul, Germania, Britannia, and Hispania. The Roman army in Gaul withdrew its allegiance from Emperor Gallienus around 260, allowing Postumus to rule as emperor for nearly ten years until he was killed by his own soldiers. This gold aureus reflects his administration and was minted at Cologne, which served as the capital of Germania Inferior.
