Historical context

This silver antoninianus was produced at the Cologne mint under Postumus. First introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a denomination thought to be valued at two denarii, the antoninianus indicated its double denomination through the emperor wearing a radiate crown. Issues of this type supplied coin required by soldier emperors and usurpers to pay troops and secure their loyalty amidst dwindling silver bullion supplies. The reverse design features the deity Serapis holding a sceptre beside a vessel, accompanied by variants of the legend "SARAPI COMITI AVG", "SARAPIDI COMITI AVG", or "SERAPI COMITI AVG".
