Historical context

This silver antoninianus was minted at Lugdunum. First introduced by Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus was a coin thought to have been valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify a double denomination. By the third century, rulers and usurpers required vast quantities of coin to pay their armies and secure military loyalty. The obverse bears the legend IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, while the reverse depicts Aesculapius accompanied by the inscription SALVS AVG.
