Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at the Lugdunum mint under the authority of the Roman emperor Probus during the Roman imperial period.

The antoninianus was introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a coin valued at two denarii. Although initially made of silver, the denomination suffered progressive debasement as the Roman Empire faced shortages of silver bullion, exhausted mines, and the ongoing need of soldier emperors to pay their troops. On this issue, the emperor is shown wearing a radiate crown, a feature indicating a double denomination, accompanied by the reverse depicting Felicitas with a caduceus and cornucopiae beside the legend "TEMPOR FELICIT".
