Historical context

This gold coin was issued for the Roman Empire under the authority of Probus, struck at the mint of Rome. The Roman Empire spanned the period from 27 BC to AD 476, during which imperial authorities produced standard currency across an extensive network of official mints.

The coin is an aureus, which functioned as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until it was superseded by the solidus in the early 4th century AD. First minted sporadically under the Roman Republic, the aureus became standardized during the imperial era, when it was originally valued at twenty-five silver denarii or one hundred sestertii. Its obverse depicts a helmeted and cuirassed bust of the emperor holding a spear and shield, paired with the legend "IMP PROBVS AVG". The reverse carries the legend "SOLI INVICTO COMITI AVG" alongside a radiate and draped bust of Sol.
