Historical context

This coin was struck under the Roman imperial authority of Emperor Probus at the mint of Rome. Issued during the Roman Empire, it formed part of the monetary output produced under a succession of soldier emperors who required coin to pay troops and maintain military loyalty amid ongoing pressures.

The denomination is an antoninianus, a coin introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD with a radiate crown to indicate a double denomination valued at two denarii. By the late third century, silver bullion shortages caused progressive debasement of the antoninianus down to minimal silver content or bronze. On this issue, the obverse legend reads "IMP PROBVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the legend "ADVENTVS AVG" and depicts the emperor Probus riding left with a captive at his feet, raising his right hand and holding a sceptre.
