Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at Rome under the authority of the Roman emperor Probus during the Roman imperial period. Probus ruled during an era when a succession of soldier emperors required continuous coin production to pay troops and secure their loyalty amidst dwindling silver bullion reserves across the empire.

First introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus featured an emperor wearing a radiate crown. The obverse bears the imperial title "IMP PROBVS AVG", whilst the reverse carries the legend "SOLI INVICTO" accompanying an image of the radiate Sol driving a chariot.
