Historical context
Introduced in early 215 AD under Caracalla as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus served as coin used to pay troops and secure their loyalty during periods when soldier emperors required immense quantities of money. Although originally struck in silver, the denomination suffered continuous debasement and stimulated inflation over the course of the third century. In keeping with the standard visual conventions for antoniniani representing emperors, the obverse bears the radiate bust of the emperor alongside the legend "IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG". The reverse illustrates Fides standing left and holding an ensign in each hand, inscribed with the legend "FIDES MILITVM".
