Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at the Ticinum mint under the authority of Emperor Probus during the Roman imperial period. First introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, the antoninianus served as a double denomination valued at two denarii. Over the third century AD, successive soldier emperors produced these issues to pay their troops and secure loyalty amidst shrinking silver bullion supplies and rising inflation.

In keeping with the convention established at its introduction, this coin features the emperor wearing a radiate crown, alongside the obverse title "IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG". The reverse combines the legend "CONCORD AVG" with an image of Concordia holding two ensigns and facing Sol, who holds a globe.
