Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of the Roman emperor Probus during the Roman imperial period. Probus ruled within an era shaped by soldier emperors and usurpers who routinely required coin to pay their troops and secure their loyalty.

The antoninianus was a denomination introduced in early 215 AD by Caracalla, initially valued at two denarii. By the late third century AD, successive issues had suffered from debasement and inflation as silver supplies ran short across the Roman Empire. The coin depicts the emperor wearing a radiate crown, which indicated the double denomination. The reverse portrays Probus clasping hands with Concordia alongside the legend CONCORDIA MILIT, CONCORDIA MILITV, or CONCORDIA MILITVM, while the obverse presents his radiate, draped bust bearing the legend IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG.
