Historical context

Issued during the Roman Empire, this silver antoninianus was struck at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Emperor Probus.

The antoninianus was introduced in early AD 215 by Caracalla as a denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify a double denomination, the coin suffered progressive debasement as silver supplies ran short, though Aurelian instituted reforms to adjust the coinage in AD 271. This issue carries the obverse legend "IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG" and displays Probus crowned by Victory with the reverse legend "RESTITVT SAEC or RESTITVT SEC". The coin ceased to be used by the end of the third century following further monetary reforms.
