Historical context

By the later third century, the Roman state relied on repeated issues of this denomination, which had originated under Caracalla in early AD 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii.

The antoninianus was initially produced in silver, distinguishable by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify its double denomination value. Over time, supplies of silver bullion ran short because the empire ceased conquering new territory, Iberian mines became exhausted, and soldier emperors and usurpers required vast quantities of coin to pay their troops and maintain loyalty. This piece carries the obverse legend "IMP C PROBVS AVG" alongside the reverse inscription "PROVIDENT AVG", which accompanies a representation of Providentia holding a globe and a sceptre.
