Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Probus was Roman emperor from 276 to 282, securing the imperial frontiers against barbarian incursions along the Rhine and Danube rivers. An active military commander who respected the Roman Senate, he was ultimately killed in a soldiers' mutiny in September 282 during preparations for a war against Persia. Struck at Siscia, this gold piece belongs to the denomination known as the aureus, the standard Roman gold coin from the 1st century BC until the introduction of the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
