Historical context

This silver coin was produced under the authority of the emperor Probus at the mint of Siscia within the Roman Empire.

The denomination is an antoninianus, a coin type first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Characterised by the depiction of the emperor wearing a radiate crown to indicate a double denomination, the antoninianus served as circulating currency during a period marked by debasement and inflation, before falling out of use at the end of the third century AD. The reverse design depicts Probus standing and holding an eagle-surmounted sceptre while receiving a globe from Jupiter, accompanied by the inscription "CLEMENTIA TEMP". On the obverse, Probus appears with the titular legend "IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG".
