Historical context
Marcus Aurelius Claudius Quintillus assumed power as Roman emperor in 270 following the death of his brother, Emperor Claudius Gothicus. His brief reign lasted only a few weeks before he was overthrown and replaced by Aurelian, who was proclaimed rival emperor by his legions. This silver antoninianus, a denomination originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD that suffered progressive debasement to support military pay, was struck for Quintillus at the ancient Anatolian city of Cyzicus in Mysia.
