Historical context

Regalian (P. C. Regalianus) was a Roman usurper who briefly held power during the Crisis of the Third Century, a period of severe political instability. Proclaimed emperor by troops stationed along the Danube in 260 or 261, he had his seat of power at the legionary fortress of Carnuntum. Revolutionary for an imperial claimant, he established his own mint at Carnuntum, producing coinage of himself and his wife before he was killed after a rule of only a few months.
