Historical context

Maximinus Daia, born Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was admitted to the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius. He claimed the rank of augustus in 310, sharing and contesting rule over the Roman Empire with Licinius until his defeat and death in 313. A committed pagan, he conducted one of the empire's final persecutions of Christians before issuing an edict of tolerance.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced at the mint of Antioch in Syria under Maximinus's authority. The obverse bears his imperial title as augustus with the legend IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, while the reverse depicts Jupiter holding Victory on a globe and leaning on a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription IOVI CONS-ERVATORI.
