Historical context

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having been proclaimed emperor by troops following service as a cavalry commander. His reign brought an end to the Crisis of the Third Century and established the Tetrarchy, in which he ruled the Eastern Empire alongside Maximian in the West, later appointing Galerius and Constantius as junior colleagues. He also reorganised provincial divisions and expanded the military.

Struck at the mint of Antioch in Syria, this silver issue bears the obverse inscription DIOCLETIANVS AVG with a laureate portrait of the emperor. The reverse depicts an open camp gate featuring three turrets and no doors, accompanied by the inscription VIRTVS - MILITVM, reflecting the military focus of the imperial administration during Diocletian's extensive campaigns and border consolidation.
