Historical context

Maxentius ruled as a Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, holding power in Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. He was the son of the former emperor Maximian. Although he maintained control in these regions, his fellow emperors did not recognise him as legitimate, and the later part of his reign was preoccupied with civil war.

Struck at the mint of Aquileia under the authority of Maxentius, this bronze AE1 piece features an obverse portrait depicting his father, Maximian, accompanied by the legend "D N MAXIMIANO SEN INV AVG". The reverse depicts Fides standing draped and holding a standard in each hand, inscribed with variations of the legend "FIDES MILITVM".
