Historical context

Galerius, born Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, ruled the Roman Empire from 305 to 311. Having previously served as caesar under Emperor Diocletian within the Tetrarchy, he campaigned across the Danube against the Carpi and fought the Sasanian Empire. Galerius was elevated to augustus in 305 following Diocletian's abdication, subsequently governing during a period marked by the breakdown of the Tetrarchic system.

Produced under Galerius's authority at the mint of Cyzicus, this bronze AE2 issue represents the imperial coinage of his reign as augustus. The obverse features his laureate head alongside the title "GAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Mars carrying a trophy and a transverse spear, accompanied by the inscription "VIRTVTI E-XERCITVS" or "VIRTVTI E-X-ERCITVS".
