Historical context

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, establishing the Tetrarchy to stabilize the Roman Empire. In 293, he appointed Galerius to serve as caesar, assigning him as a junior colleague. Galerius later gained victories against the Sasanian Empire, including taking Ctesiphon in 299, before eventually succeeding as augustus in 305. This coin was minted under Diocletian's authority at Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, an ancient city located in Thrace on the Propontis.
